"From Fries to Fuel"

Before creating this film, we worked together with Pacific Biodiesel and Midpac Pacific gas station to learn more about biodiesel.

So what is biodiesel?

Biodiesel is recycled energy from plant oil and used vegetable oil that can also be made at home.


How is Biodiesel processed?

Biodiesel is categorized into two types: one type is 100% biodiesel known as B100 whereas the other is known as B20.

B20 is made of 80% fuel and only 20% of biodiesel. If you chose to use this type of biodiesel you don't need technical adjustments in your vehicle.

How did it start?

Biodiesel was created in the 19th century due to the numerous instant fires and water pollution at local landfills. Peanut oil was being used at the time as a source of fuel. Unfortunately mineral oil such as diesel oil and heavy oil was introduced; therefore, diesel engines were shifted to chemical fuel. Only recently, biodiesel fuel has become an alternative solution to help save global warming.

The Characteristics of Biodiesel:

I n the case of making biodiesel the product's quality becomes extremely unstable. To prevent it from being unstable you need to manufacture the plant in a consistent manner. Because the raw materials are plant oils, it is re-useable and we will not run into a shortage.

The amount of gasoline you substitute will reduce the amount of green house gas there is, relating to the prevention of global warming. Even by mixing a small amount of gasoline with biodiesel will reduce the toxic substance of exhaust fumes. Unlike gasoline, biodiesel has a quality of expanding rubber and resin.

The smell of biodiesel depends on the raw material we use. For example, if you use popcorn oil your biodiesel will smell like popcorn.

Here are the steps to how biodiesel is processed:

Step 1:Tallow is taken to the tank
↓(Kept in tank for a while)

Step 2: Water separation process

Step 3: Raise temperature to 120℉~140℉ for chemical reaction purpose.

Step 4: Add acidic material such as methanol and catalyst

Step 5: Because the first condition contained different contents such as tempura and french fries, a precise inspection is needed.
↓(It will turn to a brown or dark red)

Step 6: It will separate to biodiesel and glycerin
↓(Biodiesel is lighter, so glycerin will sink)

Step 7: Filtering called "water wash" is done for four days

Step 8: The oil turns close to transparent where it is stored in the tank.

Biodiesel advantages:

Biodiesel is not hazardous to our health and it doesn't rely on the importation from the Middle East. It also does not release carbon dioxide (carbon neutral).

As I researched biodiesel I saw how it is a great advantage. With my film I plan to offer the viewers the answer to how we can save fossil fuel and give back to the environment.

放火や水の汚染などのごみ埋め立て地による問題が発生したため落花生油を燃料とし、圧縮熱で燃料に点火するエンジンとして19世紀末に発明されました。しかし、当時油田が発明され軽油や重油などの鉱物油が本格的に入手できるようになりディーゼルエンジンの燃料はバイオディーゼルから科学燃料へシフトしていきました。 近年、地球温暖化対策として再びバイオディーゼル燃料に注目されるようになりました。





→様々な油脂が含まれうるものであることから、個々の原料の性状に大きなばらつきがあるため、 廃食用油を原料とする場合は特に製品の品質が極めて不安定なものとなります。品質を安定させるためには一定程度大規模なプラントで製造を行う必要があります。植物燃料が原料なので地球に併せた油量植物を用いた持続的生産が可能で、枯渇の心配はありません。軽油に代替使用した分だけ温室効果ガスの削減となり、地球温暖化防止につながります。軽油にほんのわずかでもバイオディーゼルを混ぜるだけで排気ガス中の有害物質を大きく抑えることができます。科学燃料と違ってゴムや樹脂を膨張/劣化させやすい性質をもっています。においは原料によってそれぞれ違ってきます。例えば、ポップコーンの油でつくるとポップコーンのにおいがします!
